Singapore 鈥 David Myers, chef and owner of two restaurants in Tokyo鈥檚 Ginza Mitsukoshi shopping center, delivered the commencement address to graduates of on Tuesday, September 16. Myers advised 41 new preparing to embark on exciting careers in the restaurant and hospitality world to know both their strengths and shortcomings.

鈥淵our time here at the CIA has given you exposure to many disciplines: cuisine, the arts, business, financials, and creative thinking,鈥 said Chef Myers, one of Food & Wine magazine鈥檚 Best New Chefs in 2003. 鈥淵ou have also had time to acquire an understanding of which of those components you are best at and for which you truly have a passion鈥urround yourself with people who complement your skills and possess the strengths that you do not have.鈥

Myers opened several restaurants in Los Angeles and Las Vegas before setting his sights on Japan, where he opened the high-end p芒tisserie Sola and the California-inspired David Myers Caf茅 in 2010. He is expanding to Singapore in early 2015, with a restaurant and bar set to open at the Marina Bay Sands luxury hotel.

鈥淭he field we have chosen constantly tests our determination, our creative tenacity, and our stamina. But we love it. We wouldn鈥檛 do anything else,鈥 Myers said.

This is the third graduation ceremony at The Culinary Institute of America鈥檚 international campus, which opened in 2010. These graduates began their CIA studies in 2012 after completing a three-year diploma program in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology. Credits from previous business management courses transferred, allowing students to complete their four-year degree with two years of the CIA鈥檚 unparalleled hands-on culinary training and certain required liberal arts courses.
